Your sinuses are hollow spaces within your bones between the eyes, behind the cheekbones, and in your forehead. They have a mucus-producing lining that helps to keep your nose moist and protect against dust, allergens, and pollutants. You may need sinusitis treatment if you experience inflammation or swelling of the lining of your sinuses. It is often caused by an infection or allergy.
Symptoms of sinusitis can include the following:
- Dental pain
- Facial pain or pressure
- Loss of smell
- Nasal blockage
If symptoms last longer than a week or if symptoms are severe, contact your physician. A saline nasal wash and decongestant are common first-step sinusitis treatment. However, your doctor may also prescribe an antibiotic, antihistamine, or antifungal to help alleviate the underlying infection or allergy-causing the inflammation.
We also recommend patients hydrate to keep mucus thin and use warm compresses to reduce pain and swelling along with the nose and sinuses.
